Welcome to the School of Mining and Geosciences (SMG) at Nazarbayev University.
We are a growing school with a commitment to attract internationally renowned faculty who are dedicated to students and maintain industry recognized research programs of excellence. The School of Mining and Geosciences includes programs in Mining Engineering, Geoscience, and Petroleum Engineering. We offer MS and PhD programs in Mining and Petroleum and will soon extend graduate education to the Geosciences. At SMG, we strive to educate future industry leaders of tomorrow and conduct cutting edge research that benefits Kazakhstan and impacts the World. We have modern, state-of-the-art laboratories both for teaching and research. Kazakhstan is rich in natural resources, and we partner with industry to develop technological solutions to develop these national assets in a safe, economic and environmentally responsible manner. On the academic front, we partner with Colorado School of Mines in the USA to deliver a truly world-class education. We extend an invitation for you to join us at Nazarbayev University in the heart of the modern, innovative city of Astana.

Respectfully,

Professor Randy D. Hazlett

Dean, School of Mining and Geosciences

Mission

To be a model for higher education reform and modern research in Kazakhstan and to contribute to the establishment of Astana as an international innovation and knowledge hub.

The School's aim is to educate tomorrow’s Earth Science leaders for Kazakhstan, the region and the world. We will expand knowledge and technology through teaching and research for the prospecting,

extraction, recovery and utilization of earth resources by employing sustainable and environmentally friendly approaches in the extraction of the vast natural resources of Kazakhstan, the region and the world for the benefit of society.

History

The School of Mining and Geosciences (the School) was founded in 2016 as the premier school for earth science education and research. The Republic of Kazakhstan possesses substantial amounts of mineral and fossil fuel reserves, and this was one of the fundamental reasons four founding the School. These natural resources will continue to play a vital role in Kazakhstan’s economy especially in the short and medium-term time frames.

The School was established to transform current and emerging knowledge and technology to develop an international quality, safe, efficient and environmentally responsible methods for natural resources extraction.
