Welcome Message from the Dean

It is my privilege to welcome you to School of Mining and Geosciences (SMG) at Nazarbayev University. The Republic of Kazakhstan possesses substantial amount of mineral and fossil fuel reserves. These natural resources will continue to play a vital role in Kazakhstan’s economy especially in the short and medium-term time frames. The School of Mining and Geosciences has been established in 2016 and aims to be the premier school for earth science education and research and to transform current knowledge and technology to develop an international quality, safe, efficient and environmentally responsible natural resource industry.

We are planning to admit talented students within the area of Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and Applied Geosciences which will be taught in English with the goal of educating tomorrow’s earth science leaders for Kazakhstan, the region and the world. We also aim to develop various research programs for the prospecting, extraction, recovery and utilization of earth resources by employing sustainable and environmentally friendly approaches and to transfer the new discoveries for the benefit of society.

In fall 2017, we are planning to launch our first two-year Master’s program in Mining Engineering. We are also looking forward to welcoming our young students to the undergraduate degrees in Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and Applied Geosciences in fall 2018. In addition, we will admit students for Master’s in Petroleum Engineering in fall 2018 as well. These programs will be developed in close collaboration with Colorado School of Mines – our strategic partner and world leader within the area of earth science education and research.

I, therefore encourage you to visit our website in due course and get updated for the exiting opportunities in education and research programs as a prospective student, faculty, staff and a collaborator. Please feel free to contact us should you have any questions or comments.

With Best Regards,
Professor, Erkan Topal, Ph.D
