Nazarbayev University School of Mining and Geosciences is going to launch an SMG Open Talk series for exchanging knowledge and ideas among NU Community. School of Mining and Geosciences Faculty will cover on a variety of topics from Geology, Mining and Petroleum engineering. The SMG Open Talk series is open to all members of NU Community. Our speakers will explain the subject matter, and to define any words or terms that may be unfamiliar to those not having a familiarity with the material being presented.

The first lecture under SMG Open Talk series will take place on September 2, 2022.

If you can’t measure it, then it doesn’t exist

The geochemistry foundation is based on measurement. The capability of geochemical methods is revolutionized to the point that elemental variation can be measured at the part per trillion level. Instrumentation development and novel methodologies are crucial to obtaining high-quality geochemical data. To obtain such data, challenges are inevitable. In this talk, Dr. Azam Soltani introduce the fundamentals of LA-ICP-MS and sulfide analysis to show the challenges and opportunities.

About the speaker

Dr. Azam Soltani is Assistant Professor in Geology at NU School of Mining and Geosciences. She holds Ph.D. in Economic Geology and applied Geochemistry from University of New Brunswick, Canada. With a background in applied mineralogy and geochemistry, Dr. Azam has expertise in conducting petrological, mineral deposits, environmental research, and volcanology. She has established teaching and research experience in academia, including University of New Brunswick, CA, University of Toronto, CA, and Yachay tech, Ecuador.
