Prof. Saffet Yagiz participated in the 1st International Conference on Water Resources Security – 2024, held from May 14-16 in Omsk, Russia. The conference addressed all aspects related to the safety of water resources and was attended by representatives from federal authorities, various subjects of the Russian Federation, the scientific and expert community, including international delegates, subsoil users, and businesses.
Prof. Yagiz was invited as the Plenary session chair and Keynote speaker for the session titled "Section 8: Development of Underground Space; The Negative Impact of Groundwater on the Construction and Operation of Buildings and Structures."

In his keynote speech, "Rock Mass and Groundwater Interaction for Underground Excavations," Prof. Yagiz discussed the critical role of groundwater in urbanization and human life. He highlighted the challenges faced in underground construction and infrastructure development around cities, noting that groundwater levels can cause construction and design issues by reducing rock mass quality and effective stress at construction sites. He emphasized the adverse effects of groundwater on the structural integrity of construction in rock masses.
