On September 26–27, 2024, the School of Mining and Geosciences at Nazarbayev University (NU SMG) hosted the III Annual Geotechnical Forum organized by KAZ Minerals. This key event brought together geotechnical engineers from the company’s largest mines, along with experts from related fields such as hydrogeology, tailings management, and the application of artificial intelligence.
The forum featured presentations of research conducted by both NU SMG students and professors. Under the guidance of Professors Fidelis Suorineni and Ali Mortazavi, these projects were based on real-world data and showcased innovative approaches to solving challenges in the mining industry.
“I graduated with a master’s degree in Mining from SMG. The program was challenging, but the professors always motivated and supported us. Today, I work at the KAZ Minerals headquarters. This forum is crucial for sharing experiences among our engineers and for students, who get the chance to immerse themselves in real production processes and establish professional connections,” said Nursulu Alnazar, a geotechnical engineer at KAZ Minerals Management and an NU SMG alumna.

Strengthening Industry-Academia Collaboration

The School of Mining and Geosciences actively collaborates with KAZ Minerals, offering internships for students, guest lectures by industry experts, and specialized training for company employees.
“NU SMG and KAZ Minerals have built a long-term partnership, strengthened by the expertise of professors like Fidelis Suorineni and Ali Mortazavi. Their knowledge helps prepare students for industry challenges. NU graduates are well-versed in modern technologies and possess strong analytical skills, making them valuable assets to our company,” said Bayuprima Adiyansyah, Superintendent at KAZ Minerals Bozshakol.

Laboratory Tours and International Recognition

Forum participants, including students, professors, and invited experts, visited NU SMG’s state-of-the-art laboratories, such as the Drilling Simulation Lab, Rock Mechanics Lab, Mineral Processing Lab, Mine Ventilation Lab, and more. International guests, including leading geotechnical engineers from Australia, Dr. Neil Barr and Glen Balog, praised the university’s advanced technical facilities and educational capabilities.
The Geotechnical Forum has further solidified NU SMG’s position as a leading educational and research center, meeting the mining industry’s growing demand for skilled professionals and innovative solutions.
