Hanan Samadi – Rising Star in Tunnelling and Rock Mechanics

The School of Mining and Geosciences is proud to recognize the outstanding achievements of Hanan Samadi, Research Assistant working under the supervision of Prof. Fidelis Soureinen. Pictured alongside Prof. Fidelis Soureinen, Prof. Ali Mortazavi, and Dean Randy Hazlett, Hanan represents the next generation of innovation and leadership in the fields of tunnelling, rock mechanics, and AI-based engineering solutions.

A top graduate from the University of Tehran, Hanan has built an exceptional track record in both academic and applied research. She was recently awarded the Young Tunneller of the Year medal at the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) Awards 2024, a global recognition of excellence in tunnelling innovation.

In addition to her role at SMG, Hanan serves as:

  • Chair of the Young Committee of the Iranian Tunnelling Association (IRTAym),
  • National Board Member of the International Tunnelling Association – Young Committee (ITAym).

Her list of accomplishments includes:

  • 40+ publications in Q1 journals and international conferences,
  • A patented AI-powered software for tunnelling applications,
  • 18 international awards, including the Excellence in Research Award and Women Researcher Award from the World Top Scientists Award,
  • 15+ secured research grants,
  • Co-founder of the innovative research group USERGI,
  • Multiple invited talks and technical committee memberships.

Hanan brings over five years of combined academic and industry experience, including roles in engineering companies and tunnelling organizations. Her work bridges the gap between geomechanics and artificial intelligence, offering cutting-edge solutions for the mining and geotechnical sectors.
