Marzhan Karimova, PhD student at Nazarbayev University School of Mining and Geosciences, participated in the SPE conference at Oman Petroleum & Energy Show (OPES) which was held in Muscat, Oman on March 21-23, 2022. Marzhan presented the conference paper "Shock/Soaking Injection Scheme to Improve Oil Recovery in Carbonate Formations by Low-Salinity Water flooding". The conference included different petroleum engineering spheres such as EOR/IOR, Gas Development, Offshore and Marine oilfield development, Reservoir Engineering and Reservoir Simulation, and others. There were 110 technical sessions and 64 ePoster sessions during the conference.

The presented paper investigates the performance of low-salinity water flooding in carbonate formations. It consists of experimental and simulation studies. The idea was to examine the performance of a special water flooding design in which low-salinity water was injected as a shock for a short period. The proposed water flooding design that is called Smart Water Shock Flooding was examined experimentally and numerically at core scale and reservoir sector scale. The project was done in the research group of Marzhan Karimova, currently a PhD student at Nazarbayev University, Mahmood Fani, an MSc student at the University of Stavanger, under the supervision of Dr. Peyman Pourafshary, Associate Professor of Nazarbayev University School of Mining and Geosciences.
