Geothermal Energy Now: Opportunities in grid power, direct heat, and energy storage

On June 20, 2022, the NU School of Mining and Geosciences will hold the Expert Talk with Dr. John Holbrook, a Professor in the Department of Geology and the Energy Institute at Texas Christian University. Dr. John Holbrook will speak on the subject “Geothermal Energy Now: Opportunities in grid power, direct heat, and energy storage”

Date: 20/06/2022, Monday

Time: 11:00-12:30

Venue: Block 6, room 6.105

Dr. John Holbrook is a Professor in the Department of Geology and the Energy Institute at Texas Christian University. His research interests are field oriented, focusing mostly on both modern and ancient fluvial systems and physical stratigraphy. Current interests include basin permeability architecture and connectivity of flow paths, mechanics of discontinuity surfaces, and tectonic and climatic impact on river processes. He applies his research widely across petroleum, geothermal, and environmental issues. He is principal investigator for a National Science Foundation geothermal energy research.

Geothermal energy from sedimentary basins has emerging possibilities that speak to both a new future for sedimentary sciences and a new and important role for sediments in the emerging market for renewable energy.
