On February 6, 2023, a devastating earthquake ripped through Turkey and Syria (7.8-magnitude on the Richter scale). An earthquake is the result of the rapid release of accumulated strain energy when a fault or chunk of rock can no longer withstand movement (Fowler, 2005). Turkey and Syria are susceptible to earthquakes.
In this presentation, the fundamentals of earthquakes, the general regional geology of the area, and the causes of the Turkey-Syria earthquake will be discussed.
