On March 9, 2022, the second Annual Gender Forum at Nazarbayev University took place. Annual Gender Forum is Hosted and coordinated by The Consortium of Gender Scholars (GenCon) at Nazarbayev University, the Forum seeks to bring together interested parties to explore a range of areas related to gender with the goal of raising awareness and building bridges between researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to advance gender equity in Central Asia.

MSc Student of Nazarbayev University School of Mining and Geosciences, Dariya Shtey presented her paper “Gender in Kazakhstan’s mining industry” on the session “Early Career Researchers” of the Forum. In her presentation, Dariya Shtey addressed gender inequality in mining industry in Kazakhstan, analyzed main gender barriers, pay gap, as well as exemplified the stereotypes, and prejudice that women working in mining face. Besides existing barriers and stereotypes, another problem of underrepresentation of women in mining is a little awareness about mining industry among young female generation and their parents. Mining industry is driving force for technological development and technologies in its turn have positive effect on mining industry, as many work processes are automated and do not require physical strength to work in mining. It has been stressed that there is a need to reconsider the current state of women in mining labour that can be resulted in socio-economic growth and sustainable development.
