News_EN
On Wednesday, 23 April 2025, the School of Mining and Geosciences (SMG) proudly hosted the Oil Rig Competition for students of the PETE203 "Drilling Engineering with Lab" course.
The event took place at Block 6, Room 105, bringing together six student groups who presented their eco-friendly, functional oil rig models.
This hands-on competition challenged students to apply their technical knowledge, promote sustainability, and deliver innovative engineering solutions. Each group designed either a semi-submersible or jack-up oil rig model using recyclable materials, followed by performance testing in a wave pool.

Competition Objectives:

  • Design and build operational drilling rigs using sustainable materials.
  • Ensure structural stability and enhance drilling efficiency.
  • Compete while meeting rigorous technical and operational standards.
  • Promote sustainable, cost-effective engineering practices.

Event Highlights:

  • Student groups presented their models and answered judges’ technical questions.
  • Rig models were tested for stability in the pool in front of Block 6.
  • The event concluded with an award ceremony honoring the winners and judges.

Judges:

  • Dr. Sonny Irawan (Petroleum Engineering Department) – Lead Judge
  • Dr. Mian Umer Shafiq (Petroleum Engineering Department)
  • Dr. Alfrendo Satyanaga (Civil Engineering Department)

Winners:

🏆 1st Place: Group 3 — Az-Dana Kenzhebayeva, Diana Kanzhekenova, Shyntas Kuanyshev, Inkar Kuanyshkereyeva, and Bauyrzhan Abzhan
🥈 2nd Place: Group 1 — David Kortel, Kuralay Baktigali, Ademi Akbi, Gulzhan Utekina, and Damir Altiuly
🥉 3rd Place: Group 6 — Aruzhan Zhaksylyk, Beibarys Zhumagaliyev, Aray Tachmammetova, Bereket Assylbek, Khalida Ualikhan, and Ulys Toilybayev
The competition contributed 25% to the PETE203 course grade, providing students with invaluable experience in sustainable design, technical analysis, and teamwork.
Congratulations to all participants for their hard work, creativity, and engineering excellence!
Special thanks to our judges and organizing team for making this event a success!
