The Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (hereinafter referred to as “SERI”), in agreement with swissuniversities, has designated the University of Geneva (hereinafter referred to as “UNIGE”) as the Leading House (hereinafter referred to as “LH”) for the bilateral Science and Technology cooperation program with Russia and the CIS Region.
As LH, UNIGE is responsible for the implementation of the program in Switzerland and assumes management authority as specified in the above-mentioned Convention and annual action plans, including by funding specific projects between Switzerland and CIS Region.
Dr. Nasser Madani, Assistant Professor in the School of Mining and Geosciences was awarded a grant and is Kazakh Principal Investigator on the project Uncertainty Quantification for Natural Resources together with Prof. Philippe Renard, Swiss Principal Investigator.
This research proposes launching a long-term collaboration between the Center for Hydrogeology and Geothermics of the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland and the School of Mining and Geosciences in Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan. The aim of this collaboration will be to develop joint research activities in the broad field of uncertainty quantification for natural resources. The research will include theoretical and mathematical aspects related to uncertainty quantification, the development and exchange of software, their test and applications, and the development of guidelines for best practices. To start, we will focus on two common geostatistical simulation algorithms, namely, Plurigaussian simulation (PLURISIM) and multiple-point statistics (MPS) for modeling the oil and geothermal reservoirs in Kazakhstan and Switzerland. This can also be applicable for modeling the geo-domains in mine deposits in both countries.
