Join us for SMG’s Lab Open House Day, where you’ll get the unique opportunity to step inside our laboratories and discover the fascinating world of Geology, Mining, and Petroleum Engineering. Our laboratory assistants will guide you through each lab, explain the cutting-edge equipment, and demonstrate how students and researchers work with real-world tools to solve industry challenges.
Open Labs:
📍 Room 6141 – Drilling Simulation Laboratory (Petroleum Engineering)
Experience how petroleum engineering students learn safe drilling practices using advanced computer-based and full-scale simulation equipment. This lab features a driller’s console that allows students to control bit weight, pump pressure, and pipe movement, practicing blowout prevention and managing flow using choke and standpipe manifolds — all vital for safe and effective drilling operations.
📍 Room 6154 – Sedimentology and Petroleum Geology Laboratory (Geology)
Dive into the Earth’s history through the analysis of sediments and sedimentary rocks. This lab specializes in sedimentology and petroleum geology, focusing on understanding clastic, chemical, and organic deposits. The hands-on environment supports students in uncovering the processes that shaped the Earth's surface and contributed to our geological record.
📍 Room 6106 – Rock Mechanics Laboratory (Mining Engineering)
Discover how mining engineers study the behavior of rocks under stress. Equipped with high-pressure hydraulic systems, high-speed acoustic sensors, and precise deformation/pressure gauges, this lab allows simulation of geological stress conditions to analyze the physical properties of minerals and rocks, helping ensure safe and efficient mining operations.
